Abstract

The article addresses the issue of the influence of upbringing by mothers with borderline personality disorder on the formation of disharmonious partner relationships in adulthood. It is seen as a consequence of developmental trauma. The paper elucidated a mother's role and function in personality formation. It also discussed the tension, unpredictability, and instability of the relationship with a mother with borderline personality disorder and pathological patterns of interaction of mothers with psychotic or borderline disorders. Borderline personality disorder has been analyzed according to diagnostic manuals and manuals for determining the structural level of personality development and research on severe personality disorders. Since the experience of interacting with a mother with borderline personality disorder is hard, the article discusses studies of developmental trauma and complex post-traumatic stress disorder, including those formed under the influence of the parental family. It is typical for children of "borderline" mothers to choose a partner from the position of traumatic identification, which they perceive as the norm. They develop a counter-dependence; possible rejection of the relationship; formation of inability and fear to build harmonious partnerships, create a family, gain experience of parenthood, and care for others. Therefore, the normal development, quality of life, and psychological health of adult children of "borderline" mothers are at risk and require relevant psychotherapeutic help. We have summarized some areas of psychotherapy and assistance to an adult who was raised by a mother with borderline personality disorder. The authors emphasize the challenging nature of the formation of disharmonious personal relationships in adulthood.
