Abstract

Abstract. This article examines the phenomenon of the midlife crisis through the lens of the psy- choanalytic paradigm. The midlife crisis is described as a significant existential turning point in the process of human ontogenetic development, which is often accompanied by a reassessment of life meanings, self-perception, personal achievements, and limitations. In this context, statistical data on psychological problems and mental disorders that may emerge or become exacerbated during this life stage are summarized. In particular, attention is paid to depressive and anxiety states, psychosomatic manifestations, addictive behaviors, and other forms of psychological maladaptation. Special atten- tion is given to the analysis of the effectiveness of various psychotherapeutic approaches in working with the midlife crisis. Data on psychoanalytically oriented and psychodynamic psychotherapy are reviewed, as these approaches allow for addressing deep internal conflicts related to experiences of loss, the awareness of time limitation, and changes in the self-image, which become especially salient during this period. The article presents a clinical case that illustrates the specific features of applying psychodynamic psychotherapy in work with the midlife crisis. A discussion of this case is offered, drawing on psychoanalytic concepts and clinical observations. Based on the clinical material, it is shown that the midlife crisis can be not only a source of significant psychological distress, but also a phase that creates conditions for deep self-exploration and internal change, provided that appropriate psychotherapeutic support is available.
